10 Things to Check Off Your Bucket List on a Safari in Tanzania

Must-Have Experiences During Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure

Perhaps going on an African safari is on your bucket list. Booking a trip with Wanderful Tanzania helps you check that off that item. But travelers also seem to have other must-have experiences on their list, too, including:

1.  Seeing the Big Five

2.  Interact with a tribe

3.  Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration

4.  Spot an incredible variety of birds

5.  See the snow on Mount Kilimanjaro

6.  Locate Baobab and acacia trees

7.  Smell a Syzygium aromaticum

8.  See the Serengeti from above

9.  Snorkel the coral reef off Zanzibar

10. Enjoy chef-prepared meals in the bush

1. Seeing the Big Five

Seeing African elephants, Cape buffalo, African lions, leopards, and rhinoceros in the wilderness is often the main reason travelers wish to go on safari. The animals are nicknamed “The Big 5.” Experiencing them up close is bucket list worthy.

2. Interact with a tribe

During a fully escorted safari with Wanderful Tanzania, there is the opportunity to interact with the Datoga and Hadzabe tribes. The Hadzabe will teach travelers how to make fire, shoot with bows and arrows, and sing and dance together. They will also provide fascinating information about how they use Honeyguide birds to help them find the honey that accounts for 15% of their diet.

3. Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration

Recognized as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Natural World,” more than one million wildebeest follow the seasonal rains in an enormous loop. Wildebeest, zebras, antelopes, lions, and crocodiles all play a part in some of the most dramatic spectacles of the natural world. It’s an absolute must-see during your lifetime.

4. Spot an incredible variety of birds

Even if you’re not an avid birder, you will be amazed by the feathered creatures in Tanzania, such as the secretarybird, grey crowned crane, the ugly marabou stork, or the unbelievably colorful superb starling.

5. See the snow on Mount Kilimanjaro

You might not think snow is worth adding to a bucket list, but climate change is impacting the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Between 2014 and 2020, the Furtwängler Glacier, Kilimanjaro’s largest glacier, shrunk by 70%, and experts predict the snow will be gone by 2033. Being able to witness the snow before it melts away is a must-do.

6. Locate Baobob and acacia trees

Considered “The Tree of Life,” the baobab trees are only found in Africa. These giant succulents absorb and store water in the trunk, which enables them to produce nutrient-dense fruit in the dry season. Acacia trees are the most common tree in Tanzania and the well-known landmarks on the savanna. East Africa has around 62 species, of which six are endemic to Tanzania, and the umbrella tree has become a symbol of the African bush.

7. Smell a Syzygium aromaticum

The national flower of Tanzania is the Eastern African clove tree flower bud

with the botanical name Syzygium aromaticum. It has a distinctive aroma you likely will not encounter anywhere else in the world.

8. See the Serengeti from above

When you soar over the mighty Serengeti in a hot air balloon, you see the savannah from a unique perspective that’s worthy of any bucket list. The view is incredible and stretches for miles in every direction. You see herds of animals and can witness how they interact and migrate. When you book this add-on with Wanderful Tanzania, you’ll also be treated to Champagne toast and a full breakfast in the bush before rejoining the main safari.

9. Snorkel the coral reef off Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a haven for snorkelers and is often on their “must snorkel” lists. Why? The turquoise blue water and the coral reef are filled with butterflyfish, clown fish, and multi-colored starfish that are easy to spot in shallow water. Mnemba Atoll is the most famous conservation area in Zanzibar and is considered one of the best underwater experiences in the world.

10.  Enjoy chef-prepared meals in the bush

If going on a modern-day safari makes you think about MREs (meals ready to eat), granola bars, and beef jerky, that’s not something that belongs on a bucket list. When you travel with Wanderful Tanzania, there’s no “roughing it.” A chef prepares meals, and you can begin to imagine scenes from the Meryl Streep film, “Out of Africa.” To add to the luxury, tent camps have flushable toilets, showers, and comfortable beds with clean linens.
