Felix Mdee

“The Whisperer” • Bird Nerd • Bush Genius • Calmest Human in Tanzania

Felix is part of the Pare tribe of southern Kilimanjaro, and after spending just a few minutes with him in the bush, one thing becomes immediately clear:

This man sees things the rest of us completely miss.

Married for more than 25 years and the proud father of two daughters, Felix has dedicated most of his life to studying, protecting, and sharing the extraordinary wildlife and landscapes of Tanzania.

While attending guiding school, he specialized in:

  • Mammalogy (the study of mammals)
  • Botany (the study of plants)
  • Ornithology (the study of birds)

But birds?
Birds are his great love.

And trust us… once you spend time on safari with Felix, you’ll never look at birds the same way again.

After graduation, Felix spent 24 years working as a ranger before becoming a safari guide, where he spent another decade guiding guests throughout Tanzania. Several years ago, he made the decision to become a freelance guide so he could choose to work only with companies whose values aligned with his own.

Integrity matters deeply to Felix.

He believes safari companies have a responsibility not only to care for their guests, but also to respect and protect the wildlife, landscapes, cultures, and communities that make Tanzania so extraordinary in the first place.

That philosophy is one of the reasons Felix first partnered with Wanderful Tanzania in 2018 — and why the partnership has remained such a natural fit ever since.

According to Felix, no two safaris should ever feel the same. Each journey is carefully crafted around the seasons, migration patterns, wildlife movements, weather, and magical unpredictability that make Tanzania unlike anywhere else on earth.

And if you ask him his favorite animal?

Without hesitation: the cheetah.

Why?

Because it is the fastest land mammal on Earth… elegant, intelligent, beautifully marked, and completely dependent on instinct and speed to survive.
(He also insists cheetah cubs are the cutest babies in Africa, and honestly… he may be right.)

Felix hopes that one day he’ll have the privilege of guiding you into the wild so you can discover your own favorite African animal too.
