Simon and I are so pleased for the chance to design an absolutely unique and incredible, fully-escorted 12-day INTO THE WILD SAFARI for you and your families/friends. This safari will take place in 2026 during Tanzania’s springtime! It will indeed be green season, which means it will also be calving season for the Great Migration! Whenever we have the privilege of welcoming our friends to Tanzania, we work extra hard to elevate those safaris above and beyond our standard (yet already amazing) offerings.

We ensure you will get plenty of time in the most renowned parks, and that the locations of the beautiful tented camps and safari lodges are located deep in the wild so that you’ll be in the thick of all the action while in Tanzania. Simply paying attention to the little details, and building in some unexpected “extras” are what sets us apart from the big-box outfitters and cookie-cutter safari companies. We love family safaris, and can’t wait to welcome your big, beautiful group to Tanzania in a couple of years.

Your safari begins the moment you exit the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and are greeted by Wanderful Tanzania’s local guide(s). They will help you with your luggage and will take you to your first night’s accommodation at a beautifully appointed safari lodge in Arusha.

An exhilarating bush flight will take you from the Arusha Airport to the little Seronera Airstrip in the central region of the Serengeti National Park, where you’ll meet your team of amazing safari guide(s) for the first time! They will be there to welcome you to the Serengeti, will help you to get situated in the safari vehicle(s). Next thing you know, you’ll be on your first game drive of the safari!

The majestic and world famous Serengeti is the thing that dreams are made of! Granite kopjes (pr. co-pees) pop up, seemingly out of nowhere, and dot the landscape like islands in a sea of wind-blown grasses.

The park has a well-earned reputation for reliable and unforgettable wildlife encounters, seemingly around every bend in the road!

You should have no problem spotting elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, and more! Your guide(s) will help you spot the big cats, as those are usually much harder to locate.

And, once again, the birds play a huge role in the beauty and vibrancy of the park. They are nothing short of mind blowing, both in volume and variety!

Your next adventure will take place on the Ndutu Plains in the Southern Serengeti. This area was made famous by documentary and cinematic filmmakers, and by researchers such as Jane Goodall.

In this region, Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek form shallow basins where water accumulates from the nearby highlands. The water in both lakes are extremely saline… too saline for human consumption. Lake Ndutu is reknown for reliable and abundant wildlife encounters, but it truly comes alive with animals when the great migratory herd arrives (February-April) because it is surrounded by the dense woodlands and short-grass plains, which provide ample cover and food, and makes the perfect place for their birthing grounds. Approximately 400,000 new babies are born here during that timeframe!

NOTE FOR HOT AIR BALLOON PARTICIPANTS:
The Hot Air Balloon experience will take place in the Ndutu region, for your best chance to fly above the Great Migration herd.

Before we begin the climb out of the Serengeti and Ndutu Plains on this day, we will stop for an hour or two at the famous OLDUPAI GORGE for a chance to visit to their well-curated museum and to hear a docent speak about the storied history of this important archeological site. This gorge is known around the world as “The Cradle of Mankind,” as the oldest homonid footprints were famously discovered there by Mary Leakey in 1959.

The site remains an active archeological excavation site, with universities, museums, and other research institutions sending teams of scientists there each year to continue the exploration.

It is a fascinating place to spend a couple of hours and realize that every single person on the planet can trace their lineage to this very spot on Earth.

NEXT STOP… Ngorongoro Highlands and the village of Karatu!
As you leave the Oldupai Gorge area, the drivers will begin to make the climb into the Ngorongoro highlands and make their way around the rim road at the top of the famous crater. Before they head down the other side of the moutain, they will stop to let you peer into the Crater from the viewpoint. This will be your playground tomorrow… but for now, it’s on to your next amazing accommodation just outside of the village of Karatu.

Your guide(s) will take you on the road less traveled, as you head out into the Great Rift Valley on this day. Wanderful Tanzania is one of only a handful of safari companies who make the extra effort needed to provide guests an opportunity to interact with three different groups of the indigenous people who live in this valley.

The first stop should be the “blacksmith family” of the Datoga tribe. These folks adeptly turn scrap metal into useful weapons and really beautiful and fun jewelry!

The blacksmith family is delightful, and will encourage you to participate in a good bit of the process, if you choose to do so. Otherwise, just sit back and watch the magic!

While in this area, you’ll also pay a visit to the farming family of the Datoga tribe. This is a family comprised of a 93+ year old patriarch (pictured below), his 10 wives, 50+ kids, and 100+ grandkids. This man is absolutely brilliant to interact with… very funny, genuine, and still sharp as a tack!

The women of the farming family do almost everything in the tribe… farming, ranching, harvesting, grinding, cooking, bearing and raising the kids, beadwork, and dealing with the very few tourists who are lucky enough to get to meet them in person.

It is always polite to ask if you can take photos of them and their children. They will say YES! They love to have their pictures taken, and will then swarm around you to see the pictures on your phone screen!

Feel free to ask them questions about the plural marriage situation, what a day in their life is like, what happens when one of them has a new baby, etc. The interpreter will help you communicate with one another… and they may even start asking you about your lives too!

If we get very lucky and our timing is perfect, there is a slim chance we may get to interact with the famous Hadzabe Tribe…the last hunter/gatherer tribe in all of Africa.

Experts say there are only about 1000 of them left at this point, and that they will likely die out completely in the next couple of decades, as the women are being persuaded to leave the tribe and marry into the Massai tribe for a better lifestyle.

This tribe speaks a very different language that is filled with lots of clicks and popping noises, so ask your interpreter to help you learn to say “Hello” and “Thank you” in Hadza!

Members of the tribe (via your interpreter) will tell you all about their weapons, hunting techniques and traditional ways. They may let you shoot their bows and arrows, or perhaps you’ll be invited to help them make fire! You never know what you’ll get to see or do when you visit these fascinating people!

The Hadza hunt nearly every day, just to keep their families fed. They will hunt almost anything from mice and birds to huge antelope… and everything in between. About 15% of their sustenance comes from honey! Ask the interpreter to explain how they gather so much honey… it is truly fascinating!

I intentionally leave Day 10 sort of flexible so that the guides can determine the best activities for the group on this day. We may do a mini game drive in Manyara National Park and/or visit the African Galleria for shopping, exploring and a fantastic East African lunch that will gets rave reviews from our past guests! The Galleria is an amazing mixture of exhibits, galleries, fair-trade and authentic souvenirs, exquisite jewelry, and an incredible open-air restaurant with delicious East African food and refreshing drinks! While we are here, the group will enjoy and amazing lunch highlighting that delicious East African cuisine at its beautiful open-air restaurant!

Ebony Experience
You can learn all about the rare and precious gemstone called “Tanzanite” that comes out of only one mine in the world (very near the JRO airport, interestingly enough!) Another whole immersive and interactive exhibit at the Galleria focuses on Ebony. Both of these are fascinating and fun to explore! Experts estimate that the Tanzanite mine will be tapped out in the mid-2030s, which will drive the value of this gemstone higher and higher.

Shopping galore!

You can shop for high-quality, beautiful souvenirs at the Galleria’s gift shop, and check EVERYTHING off your holiday gift list… including some precious Tanzanite, if you’re so inclined!

NOTE: You may use credit cards here without any concerns at all… and shipping is available (for a pretty steep fee).

East-African Cuisine in a relaxed open-air atmosphere…
Once you are finished exploring the shops, exhibits, and galleries, head out to the open-air restaurant and grab an ice-cold beer (or two). Around lunchtime, the group will gather here to share an authentic East African lunch together. Some of the best food I’ve ever eaten has been at this restaurant! It is delicious!

It is worth the early wake up to be one of the first groups to reach the crater floor on “Crater Day”… the last game drive, and final day of safari-related activities

While on the floor of this UNESCO site, it will be everyone’s primary goal to be on the lookout for the endangered Black Rhino. This will be your best shot at finding this element of the Big Five!

Although Tanzania has many wilderness and wildlife show pieces, this one is particularly difficult to put into words. With remarkable views from the ridge above, to the real action on the crater floor, the crater embodies a constant stir of wildlife and unspoiled scenes to keep you engrossed.

One of our past guests described Ngorongoro as “Where Heaven Meets Earth!” Another said it was like “A mixture of Narnia and Seuss, with just a dash of Jurassic Park!” However YOU describe it, it is a MUST-SEE on any Tanzanian safari!

Millions of years ago this enormous volcano collapse and formed this massive CALDERA that everyone mistakenly calls the “Ngorongoro Crater.”

Present day, this caldera is now an incredible, self-sustaining ecosystem that boasts the highest density of African wildlife on Earth, and a UNESCO World Heritage site to boot!

After breakfast, you will load into the safari vehicles for one more ride (all tarmac this time) back to Arusha to complete the loop!

The guides will bring you to one of the nice safari lodges in Arusha Town, where you will have a last lunch together before enjoying a day-use room for several hours. Feel free to use your room to freshen up, rest, or repack in preparation for your departures tonight. Your guides will let you know what time to be back in the lobby for the hour-long drive to the airport to complete your time in Tanzania. We assure you we will get you to the airport very early so that you can get through the check-in and security process with plenty of time to relax onto your homebound flight.

GRATUITY OPPORTUNITY

During the last lunch would be the perfect time to thank your guide(s) for a job well done, if you wish to do so. These guys, perfect strangers just 12 short days ago, are very likely to now be your treasured friends. They will wish you safe travels and know they are sending you home with your hearts and minds full of wonderful memories from your time in Tanzania! To be clear, a small portion of your safari fees are earmarked for guide gratuity… but every past guest has expressed the desire to offer then additional tips to express your gratitude for their expertise, education, and the care they took of you throughout the safari. . It is your generosity that helps them put their children through school, and helps them survive the “off seasos” each year.

You’ll spend your first night in Tanzania at one of the amazing safari lodges in Arusha Town. This one is very near the airport you’ll be flying out of on the morning of Day 2. If you are arriving into Tanzania on this day, you’ll be brought directly to the lodge so that you can relax and rest following your long flights.

After your long flights, you can rest assured that a nice hot shower and comfortable bed await.

During your time in the Central Serengeti, you’ll be staying at one of the incredible tented camps in that region. While each camp has a different vibe, they are little havens of comfort and relaxation smack-dab in the middle of the bush! With all the amenities you could desire, they are truly a wonderful home away from home!

The sunrises and sunsets in the Serengeti are reliably breathtaking, as is the beauty of this wild and precious place. You can’t help but feel the tensions of the first world melt away, so be sure to stay present and soak in every detail of your safari. So once back at camp after a long day of game viewing, take a nice hot shower, get a bit of rest, and then head over to the campfire to have a drink before dinner and to watch one of those aforementioned sunsets.

We hope these are the moments that give you pause, and let you simply relax and reflect on where you are, and the gifts from another day on safari.

Wanderful Tanzania selects only well-located and well-run tented camps that can truly deliver an amazing experience to our guests. Nothing beats a hot shower and a spacious, comfy place to relax after a long day of game driving, bumpy roads, and close-up wildlife encounters.

During your time in Ngorongoro Highlands, you’ll be staying at one of the amazing safari odges in the Karatu region. Check with the front desk to see what activities or amenities may be available each evening. Enjoy the pool, the view, and the amazing peacefulness of the surroundings.

Your final two nights in Tanzania will be spent at the Ngorongoro Farm House near the entrance to the Ngorongoro Crater. You can enjoy strolling through their 600 acres of coffee groves, manicured gardens, and rolling farmland. Be sure to catch happy hour in the evening, poolside. If you have a chance to join the guided coffee tour one evening, jump at it!

Weather permitting, dining here is outdoors.

Hot Air Balloon Experience

$650 pp

Experience the serenity and breathtaking beauty of the Serengeti at sunrise by adding the hot-air balloon experience option to your safari. An early morning, for sure, but it provides the only time during the safari for seeing the Serengeti from a safari truck in the darkness. The Serengeti comes alive at night with nocturnal predators, grazing hippos, and other things that go bump in the night! Just the truck ride is a great experience, but nothing compares to soaring peacefully above this majestic land!

All of the balloon pilots are all highly trained and skilled balloon professionals. While they cannot control WHERE the balloon goes, they can control the elevation and can spin the balloon 360 degrees, ensuring everyone has the perfect view of every scene you may float above!

It is breathtaking to look DOWN on a tower of giraffes, or soar above the grasslands and witness a pride of lions or herd of elephants on the move… or so actually see the endless lines of the great migration herd strung out across the plains.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience is followed by a champagne toast and a full English-breakfast and celebration in the bush. Advanced bookings are required, so please let us know if you wish to add this to your safari package.

Reservations and advanced bookings are required. Please let us know if this is something you would like to add to your safari, and we’ll handle the rest.

Or maybe you just want to grab your book and a cocktail and just sit with your feet in the pool as you watch the sunlight glint off the ripples of the beautiful sea. TRANSFERS & TRANSPORTATION

MEET JUMA!!!

Your transfers between the airport and resort are included in this package, and will be provided by (or coordinated by) Juma, Susie’s dear friend and professional driver in Zanzibar. There will be a couple of planned activities while we are on the ist all other transportation around the island will be up to you.

You will meet Juma and his team as they greet you at the airport, take you to our resort, and get you back to the airport in time for your onward flights back to the USA (or to the mainland of Tanzania for your safari)

NOTE: I will also give you his WhatsApp details so you can reach out to him as well, just in case you want to leave the resort to explore the island a bit!

Juma is a Zanzibar native, and knows the island inside and out. He has been absolutely rock solid and reliable every single time I’ve needed him, and has taken excellent care of the guests I’ve sent to Zanzibar on their own.

ACTIVITIES IN ZANZIBAR

Some of the FUN THINGS I’ve done on my trips to Zanzibar…
You will have plenty of things to keep you occupied at the resort… but should you choose to leave the property, I hope the following suggestions are helpful!

  • A simple driving tour to the Northern tip of the island or some of the other popular beach areas, like Zanzibar Kite Park along Paje Beach.
  • A wonderful walking tour of Stone Town (including Freddie Mercury’s house, and a heart-wrenching visit to the Slave Market…ooph… powerful, my friends!)
  • A super fun, interactive, and educational visit to one of the famous Spice Farms.
  • If you really want a treat, ask Juma to take you to the Forodhani Gardens Night Food Market along the harbor front. There, vendors sell grilled seafood, kebobs, pizzas, and other delicious bites! It is a warm, welcoming, casual environment where everyone is welcome!

* Dependent on final accommodations & level of room selected)

With some advanced planning, our “almost wallet-less” journeys can make safari dreams a reality for nearly everyone.

“Almost wallet-less“ means that we include about 90% of the total costs in the price of the safari, and then offer guests a flexible payment schedule which allows them to break the payments into smaller payments that can be made over many months leading up to the safari. The other 10% (+/-) of the associated costs is money that guests will need to bring in cash on the safari, which we talk about in detail in our Tour Packet, which we send out to every guest upon registration.

In fact, we guide you all the way through the paperwork and preparation needed before the safari. Our goal is for every guest to arrive in Tanzania relaxed and ready to enjoy their wild adventure, without needing to worry about their wallets.

Why Safari During Green Season?

The short answer to that question is… because its green and its time for the Baby Bloom!!

If you picture endless plains of golden grasses waving in the wind, with some magnificent beast in the foreground when you think of a safari, you’re not alone! You share that iconic image with millions of people around the world, as it is the epitome of PEAK Season in Tanzania.

Now imagine that same scene, but this time imagine your creatures surrounded by vibrant green grasses and blue waterways under stunningly gorgeous skies. That’s what Green Season is all about in Tanzania!

More Benefits of a Green Season Safari

  • Smaller crowds
  • Little to no dust
  • Fun mud-bogging is possible (and sometimes necessary)
  • Access to the spectacular Ndutu region (seasonal region of the Serengeti)
  • Soft light and drama!!! This time of year there are dramatic clouds and breathtaking skyscapes in every direction (a photographer’s dream!)
  • A slight chance for rainbows over the savannas
  • A chance to hear the sound of rain on your tent as you drift off to sleep
  • You’ll be immersed in the Great Migration as they gather on the Ndutu plains, where they will give birth to more than 400,000 babies between around the February timeframe.
  • There are beautiful birds, everywhere!
  • Love is in the air! (while the Great Migration is busy bearing their young, it seems like everyone else is mating!)
